CHAPTER 12

MASSIMILIANO

I’m up late into the night, putting plans into motion for the next day and beyond.

Dominic is right—I should have instituted better protection the instant I had Valentina Velazquez picked up.

But I really had not expected her father’s people to track her down quite so quickly.

I stop by Valentina’s suite to check in on her before I finally go to bed.

She’s fast asleep, and I pause in the doorway of her bedroom, staring at her sweet face in repose.

Part of me wants to climb into bed with her, but there will be plenty of time for that after the wedding ceremonies.

Then I shake off my fascination with her and return to my own room, where I lie awake far too long, considering what tomorrow will bring.

Despite my late bedtime, I wake at my usual early hour the next morning and head toward the kitchen.

Most mornings, Susan would be bringing a tray to my rooms, but I’d given her a list of tasks to complete this morning to help prepare for the day and told her to simply set up the coffee in the kitchen—she might want to wait on me hand and foot, but I am perfectly capable of getting my own coffee. Of course, then she’d spent yesterday afternoon baking muffins, apparently convinced I’ll starve without her intervention.

Now, although Susan has called in reinforcements from our family retainers, no one else has arrived yet. I’d given them time off after my father’s death. With just me in the house and a minimal security team, Susan has been able to take care of everything with nothing more than a weekly visit from the cleaning staff.

That’s all about to change.

Not only are we beefing up security, but the household is about to have a new mistress—and the last thing I want to do is embarrass Susan in any way. She’s proud to have served our family for so long, so when she suggested over the phone that I bring the staff back on full-time, I took her suggestion to heart.

Besides, my brother Lorenzo is coming home today—and the last thing I want is to subject Valentina to my Casanova of a sibling—not without the buffer of other people around, anyway.

When I get to the kitchen, I discover that Lorenzo is already here.

“Max,” he calls out, moving across the room to wrap me in a hug. “What the hell is this?” he asks almost immediately, stepping back and scowling at me, but with a smile working under the expression. “I leave for a few weeks and get a text that it’s time to come home because you’re getting married? What the fuck, man?”

“Jesus, Lorenzo,” I say, running my hand through my hair and moving toward the already full coffee pot. “No one should be subjected to you before coffee.”

“Subjected, my ass.” He gives me a light punch on the shoulder, but his words don’t carry any heat. “Seriously. Who are you marrying?”

I wait until I’ve pulled down a mug and filled it to the brim before I turned to face him.
